Holocaust Memorial Day 2019

On 18th January, students were invited to reflect on this year’s Holocaust Memorial Day theme of “Torn from Home”. Mr Kemp spoke to KS3 students about how the starting point for many genocides and persecution throughout history has been the moment when people leave their home – often for the last time. By thinking about what “home” means to them, students were able to empathise with the plight of victims of the Holocaust and the Rwandan genocide and of modern-day refugees. Rather than focussing only on the horrors of genocide, students reflected on the happy and familiar sights and smells which characterised life for so many people throughout the last century before they were “torn from home”. These victims of persecution, such as Anne Frank, were not nameless statistics but human beings with their own unique stories.
