PARENT NEWSLETTER (4 – 8 FEB)

Dear Parents,

Thank you, thank you, thank you.

I was overwhelmed by your generosity when we requested your support for Sarah Almagro’s campaign. I reported to you in last week’s newsletter that the total raised was € 3,836.10. I am delighted to inform you that yesterday morning a cheque was presented to Sarah’s mother for the sum of € 6.000. The increase in the amount was due to the donation by a Primary parent of the school (who wishes to remain anonymous), a donation by the Interact Club, and further contributions received throughout the week.

One of Aloha’s core values – “Caring” – is certainly evident within our parent body. Thank you.

YEAR 13 PARENTS CONSULTATION EVENING

This was held last Monday evening with 55% of parents in attendance. This is a crucial time for our Year 13 pupils as they work towards their final examinations, starting in May.

FOOD SERVICE

Thank you for the positive comments that we are receiving regarding our food service. If there are any concerns we try very hard to rectify them. If your child does not have school lunch, why not consider sampling one on our next parents’ invitation day?

CHRISTMAS CHALLENGE

The following pupils and teachers successfully completed the PE Department’s Christmas Challenge. Congratulations to them all. Although I finished ranked third from the bottom of the table, one of the pupils said to me “at least you tried”.

I would seriously like to see evidence of Mr Escobar and Mr Roth’s results  😉 😉  😉  😉  😉  😉  😉

GREAT EXPECTATIONS

Tickets are selling quite slowly. I will be really disappointed if the audiences are small on these nights. The pupils and staff have worked so hard for these performances and we really want to see them appreciated.  As we are still learners it is a wonderful opportunity to see this play and understand how Pip’s tremendous experiences bring him to realise what is really important in life. Tickets are on sale in the administration office.

MEDICAL PROCEDURES

Please can I politely remind parents not to send medicines into school unnamed, or not labelled with the dosage. Also when possible please administer medicines before or after school time. We do understand that in rare occasions antibiotics may need to be given at lunch time; however, for the health and safety of your children we will not administer any medicine without clear written instructions. Please support us on this matter.

We also have a few instances where children are asking teachers in the morning to change bandages and plasters because they are not available at home. Please understand that we are unable to provide this service.

CONGRATULATIONS

Congratulations to our “Climate Detectives” who, led by Doctor Walker, visited the beach in San Pedro last Saturday. They are coming to see me on Monday to tell me more!

Have a lovely weekend with your families.

Yours sincerely,

PRIMARY SCHOOL

Dear Parents,

It was wonderful to address the whole Primary School on Monday following the return to the Hall. As I reflected afterwards, it reminded me how much we have to celebrate each week in the Primary School. In addition to our Stars of the Week in English and Spanish, linked to my weekly target, it was a pleasure also to recognise the achievements of our Manga High maths medal winners and the stamina and resilience of the Year 5 and Year 6 cross country team. A special congratulations to James Robb in 2CMA for his latest medal in wrestling at only “six and a half”!

I can see that the Eco-message is already beginning to have an impact by the numbers of pupils bringing their own water bottles to school to minimise the use of plastic. Thank you so much for your support in this matter.

The ECO committee remains dedicated to the cause of raising awareness of how our actions
influence our environment. The group led by Miss Francesca (Eco Club) has been exploring chemicals in cosmetic products. The children were shocked by some of the harsh ingredients involved in some of the products. For this reason, we decided to make our own toothpaste using mild and edible ingredients. The children enjoyed choosing their own flavours using edible essential oils.

Finally, please remember that your child must be collected on time at the end of the day. It is so sad to see children becoming distressed when their parents are late and all the other children have left. This also applies to the end of clubs.

Next week’s target: EFFORT
Talk Homework: If you were a character in a film what would you be? What would you do that would make you special?

Your sincerely

SECONDARY SCHOOL

Dear Parents,

Do good explanations have to be true?  I let you ponder on this for a few minutes before you come up with an answer. Perhaps this is a a little challenging for our KS3 students at the moment. I am sure you can give them a hand.

I have been reflecting on this question for more than 10 days and, unfortunately, I am unable to reach any conclusions. Earlier this week, Noah Zoppi in Year 13 and I were also bouncing ideas off each other on the same topic. I am now unsure if we came to an agreement!

This is the beauty of Theory of Knowledge, a subject taught in the Sixth Form which provides an opportunity for students to reflect on the nature of knowledge, and on how we know what we claim to know. I teach the subject this year and I find it absolutely fascinating.

Going back to the original question, here is an explanation I have recently come across:

‘The weight displayed by your bathroom scales depends on your body mass and the  Earth’s gravity. That’s why if you used the scales on the moon with much less gravitational force, the displayed weight would be much less’

I let you answer these questions:

  • Is this a good explanation?
  • Is it true?

Please ask your children to think about  this over the weekend and encourage them to share their ideas with me. I look forward to hearing their thoughts on it!

I hope you have a nice weekend.

Yours sincerely,
