On Wednesday 7th February, Aloha College hosted the Costa del Sol International Schools’ basketball championships at Under 15 level. Seven teams competed.
Aloha College A Team boys played exceptionally well, making it to the final to play against another superb team from Laude. After a slow start, the Aloha boys just could not close the gap on what remained a 10-point difference throughout the match with Laude running out winners: 15 – 5. The Aloha College Boys B team managed to make it to the third and fourth place play-off match against a strong BIC A side. Despite an excellent comeback, they just lost out. The highlight of the game was a Roberto Menchen 3 pointer from downtown! Unlucky boys you really did play for the jersey.
In the girls’ tournament there were some very strong performances from Sotogrande and BIC A who made it into the final. BIC A ran out winners after extra time 6 – 4.
The Aloha College A and B sides met each other in the third and fourth play-off game which went into overtime with the game tied at 2 – 2. After a further 2 points each in overtime the teams were forced into a free throw sudden death. Unbelievably, the two teams could not break away from each other, scoring and missing the same number of times with each shot. A decision was made after 8 different attempts to call the match a draw 7 – 7 resulting in both teams sharing the bronze medal.
The whole day showcased Aloha College at its best. Referees were superb, the students attitude and performances were first class and all the staff and students that came to watch were respectful and thoroughly enjoyed the spectacle.
Thank you to all who participated and everyone who assisted in making the day a huge success.
Well done on another fantastic sporting achievement.
