Our Aloha College Under 19s girls and boys competed on Wednesday 4 October in the coast’s International Schools tournament hosted at Atalaya.
Despite being in extremely difficult groups both the boys and girls qualified comfortably with the girls coming from behind to clinch a second place. Both teams managed to play some expansive, attacking basketball and looked organised and solid in defence.
In the semi finals, the girls beat the host school Atalaya, supported by the whole school, in the semi final, 16-8. The boys team ran out relatively comfortable winners against Swans, winning 18-9, with a fantastic slam dunk by Alessandro Scariolo and a miracle shot from under the basket by Samer Anwar-Ahmed.
Both finals were tense affairs. For the girls, defence was critical versus a very tall and talented Swans team. Katia Borisova was outstanding, letting nothing past whilst Beatrice Capote was clinical in attack. They ended up winning the final 14-7.
The boys final was incredible. Playing the hosts Atalaya, supported by a partisan crowd, their quality shone through, scoring some outstanding team baskets and keeping everything locked down in defence. The final score Aloha 18- Atalaya 12.
Aloha not only won both events but also showed grit and determination, team spirit and a fighting attitude that represents the determination of Aloha’s sporting teams. The students were excellent ambassadors for the school and we should be extremely proud of their achievement.
Well done all.
