Amanda Aspeborg an IB Visual Arts Student, was recently provided with a challenging opportunity to work alongside patients with mental disabilities at the Centro Penitenciario de Sevilla. It took Amanda six months to organise the visit and she was delighted to be allowed to work with an art therapist on a series of workshops. As part of her studio work Amanda has been responding to various kinds of imprisonment, both physical and emotional. After studying Stockholm Syndrome and Outsiders Art she decided she needed to get closer to the subject, working with adults with illnesses such as paranoid schizophrenia and depression.\”I was pleased with the outcome, but also surprised. I had expected the patients to use dark colours and images; however, they barely touched the dark paints and instead focused on the bright colours and painted landscapes and nature. The whole experience was fantastic and one I will never forget.”
